This difference is important when considering the cultural history of cinema. Radio, television, video, digital technology, and the internet gradually changed the ways in which people accessed films and information. Nevertheless, technological change did not erase the cultural value of the mobile screening experience. In many parts of the world, outdoor and traveling film festivals continue the tradition of bringing cinema directly to audiences. Portable digital projectors and modern sound systems have made it easier to organize temporary screenings. Contemporary mobile cinema projects may use technologies very different from those of the twentieth century, but the central idea remains remarkably similar: cinema should not be limited by the walls of a theater.
