The central relationship in Mah-e Asal is that between Reza and Minoo. Reza is closely connected to the family of Hossein, who is known as Khan Baba. He and his mother, Mah-Banoo, are companions of this household, giving Reza an intimate familiarity with the family and its members. This familiarity is particularly important because Reza spends considerable time with Changiz, Khan Baba’s son. Through Changiz, Reza is not simply an outsider who suddenly becomes interested in Minoo; he is already connected to the family environment.
Reza’s affection for Minoo becomes the emotional center of the story. Minoo, however, is situated within a family structure in which her personal desires are not necessarily the decisive factor in determining her future. Her father, Khan Baba, has his own plans for her marriage. He has selected Mahmoud, the son of Akbar Khan, as a suitable husband for his daughter.
This arrangement establishes the primary conflict of the film. Reza and Minoo represent individual affection, while Khan Baba represents family authority and the traditional power to determine a daughter’s marriage. The disagreement is therefore not merely between two men competing for the same woman. It is a conflict between different ideas of what marriage should mean.
