For Reza, marriage is connected with affection and emotional attachment. For Khan Baba, marriage is initially connected with family decisions, social relationships, and what he considers appropriate for his daughter. Minoo’s own opposition to the proposed marriage demonstrates that the conflict cannot be resolved simply by selecting a husband on her behalf.
Khan Baba and the Authority of the Family
Khan Baba is one of the most important figures in the story because he embodies the authority of the household. His opposition to Reza’s relationship with Minoo gives the film its principal obstacle. His decision to favor Mahmoud indicates that he believes he has the right to determine the appropriate future for his daughter.
The character can therefore be understood as representing a traditional paternal structure. The father stands at the center of the family, and his approval carries considerable weight. Reza cannot simply declare his love for Minoo and expect the relationship to be accepted. He must confront the authority of her father.
At the same time, the film does not present the family as completely united behind Khan Baba. Minoo herself objects to the marriage arrangement. This is significant because it prevents the narrative from becoming a simple confrontation between Reza and an entirely unified traditional family. Instead, the family contains disagreements and competing viewpoints.
