Houshang and the Complication of the Marriage Plot
The introduction of Houshang further complicates the story. When Minoo rejects the original arrangement, the family introduces another young man, Houshang, as her fiancé. Houshang’s background makes him particularly interesting: he has returned from the United States and already has a fiancée abroad.
This situation creates an element of irony within the narrative. Houshang appears to be another possible obstacle to Reza and Minoo, yet his own circumstances mean that he does not genuinely function as a conventional romantic rival. Instead, he becomes connected to Khan Daei’s efforts to help Reza.
Houshang’s experience abroad also distinguishes him from the other characters. His return from the United States places him in a different social and cultural position. He has experienced a world beyond the immediate environment of Khan Baba’s household, while still being drawn into its complicated expectations concerning marriage.
His willingness to help Khan Daei encourage Reza demonstrates that appearances can be misleading. Although he is presented as Minoo’s prospective fiancé, he ultimately contributes to the possibility of Reza and Minoo being together.
Love Versus Arranged Marriage
One of the central themes of Mah-e Asal is the tension between romantic love and arranged marriage. Reza’s feelings for Minoo are personal and emotional, while the proposed marriage to Mahmoud is based on a decision made by the family.
