Mohammad Javad Zarif is one of the most prominent Iranian diplomats and political figures of the contemporary era. Born on January 8, 1960, in Tehran, Iran, he has played an important role in shaping Iranian foreign policy, particularly regarding relations with Western countries, international organizations, and the Middle East. Throughout his professional career, Zarif has become widely recognized for his diplomatic experience, negotiating abilities, and extensive knowledge of international law and political affairs.
Zarif served as Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from August 2013 until August 2021 under President Hassan Rouhani. During this period, he became internationally known as the leading Iranian negotiator in the discussions that resulted in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear agreement, signed on July 14, 2015.
Before becoming foreign minister, Zarif held several important positions, including Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2002 to 2007. His career has involved negotiations, international diplomacy, academic activities, and efforts to strengthen Iran’s position in global political institutions.
In August 2024, Zarif was appointed Vice President for Strategic Affairs under President Masoud Pezeshkian, although his tenure ended in March 2025.
