His American education provided him with valuable knowledge of Western political institutions and helped him develop communication skills that would become essential during his diplomatic career.
Beginning of His Diplomatic Career
Zarif’s diplomatic career began during a period of significant political transformation in Iran.
Following the Iranian Revolution of 1979, the country experienced fundamental changes in its political institutions, foreign policy, and relations with Western governments.
Relations between Iran and the United States deteriorated dramatically after the revolution, particularly following the seizure of the American embassy in Tehran in November 1979.
Against this background, Zarif began working with Iran’s diplomatic representation at the United Nations in 1982.
His strong command of English, familiarity with American society, and knowledge of international relations made him a valuable member of the Iranian diplomatic establishment.
Although he was relatively young and had limited formal diplomatic experience, he gradually became involved in important international discussions.
