Zarif attended Alavi School, a private religious educational institution in Tehran known for combining modern academic subjects with Islamic instruction. The school educated numerous individuals who later became influential in Iran’s political and administrative institutions.
His early education provided him with a foundation in religious thought and academic discipline, while his later experiences abroad exposed him to different political systems and international perspectives.
Education in the United States
At approximately seventeen years of age, Zarif moved to the United States to continue his education. This decision marked an important turning point in his life because it allowed him to become familiar with American society, culture, and educational institutions.
He initially attended Drew College Preparatory School in San Francisco, California. During this period, he improved his English-language abilities and adapted to a new educational environment.
After completing his secondary education, Zarif enrolled at San Francisco State University, where he studied international relations. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1981 and subsequently completed a master’s degree in international relations in 1982.
