“Christmas” is a shortened form of “Christ’s mass”. Crīst (genitive Crīstes) is from Greek Khrīstos (Χριστός), a translation of Hebrew , “Messiah”, meaning “anointed”; and mæsse is from Latin missa, the celebration of the Eucharist.
