Seyyed Hassan Mostafavi, widely known as Seyyed Hassan Khomeini, was born on August 1, 1972, in Qom, Iran. He is an Iranian Shiite cleric, scholar, and political figure who belongs to one of the most prominent families in the modern political and religious history of Iran. He is the grandson of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the son of Seyyed Ahmad Khomeini, who was one of Ruhollah Khomeini’s closest family members and political aides. Through his family background, religious education, and public activities, Hassan Khomeini has occupied an important position at the intersection of Iran’s clerical establishment, revolutionary heritage, and reform-oriented political currents.
Among his principal responsibilities are serving as custodian of the tomb of Ruhollah Khomeini, heading the Institute for the Compilation and Publication of Imam Khomeini’s Works, and participating in the leadership and trusteeship structures of Islamic Azad University. These positions have given him responsibilities extending beyond religious scholarship. They have also placed him in a position to interpret, preserve, and present the political and intellectual legacy of his grandfather. His public statements and relationships with political figures have consequently attracted considerable attention, particularly during periods of political tension in Iran.
