Politicians at the funeral of Hassan Khomeini’s mother-in-law

Hassan Khomeini also heads the Institute for the Compilation and Publication of Imam Khomeini’s Works. The institute is responsible for collecting, preserving, organizing, and publishing materials related to Ruhollah Khomeini’s writings, speeches, correspondence, and intellectual legacy.

This responsibility gives Hassan Khomeini an important role in determining how the ideas and writings of his grandfather are preserved and presented to future generations. Ruhollah Khomeini’s legacy is complex, combining religious philosophy, Islamic jurisprudence, revolutionary political thought, and the theory of Islamic government. The institute therefore has significance not simply as an archive but also as an institution involved in interpreting an important part of Iran’s modern intellectual history.

Following the death of his father, Seyyed Ahmad Khomeini, Hassan assumed these responsibilities. In a letter to Supreme Leader Seyyed Ali Khamenei, he referred to his appointment according to his father’s wishes and emphasized his belief that the Islamic system should remain connected to the ideas and teachings of Ruhollah Khomeini.

The letter illustrated an important aspect of Hassan Khomeini’s political and religious position. Although he has often been associated with reformist figures, he has also emphasized the legitimacy of the Islamic Republic and the importance of the doctrine of velayat-e faqih, or guardianship of the Islamic jurist.
