Politicians at the funeral of Hassan Khomeini’s mother-in-law

Teaching these texts requires familiarity with Arabic language, Islamic jurisprudence, logic, and the methodology used by Shiite scholars to analyze religious sources. His teaching career therefore became an important part of his development independent of his family background.

From approximately 1999, Hassan Khomeini began teaching more advanced seminary levels and continued this work for roughly a decade. His teaching eventually expanded to advanced discussions in usul al-fiqh, or the principles of jurisprudence.

His advanced teaching outside the traditional introductory curriculum began during the 2010–2011 academic year. He has taught these advanced courses at the Dar al-Shifa school in Qom. Through this work, he has sought to establish his own identity as a religious scholar rather than being known exclusively as the grandson of Ruhollah Khomeini.

His scholarly activities are particularly important because Iran’s political system gives religious scholarship a major role in public life. A cleric’s standing is influenced not only by family background but also by the depth of his education, teaching experience, scholarly relationships, and ability to engage with established traditions of jurisprudence.

Responsibilities at the Khomeini Mausoleum and Institute

One of Hassan Khomeini’s most important public responsibilities is his position as custodian of the tomb of Ruhollah Khomeini. The mausoleum is both a religious site and a major symbol of the Iranian Revolution.

Ruhollah Khomeini’s tomb is located near Tehran and has become an important location for official ceremonies, commemorations, speeches, and political gatherings. Because of its symbolic importance, the person responsible for the site occupies a position with considerable public visibility.
