2. The Political Situation and the Emergence of Political Parties after 1941
The beginning of Mohammad Reza Shah’s reign coincided with a period of political liberalization in Iran. Unlike his father, who had established a highly centralized authoritarian system and severely restricted political opposition, the young Shah initially lacked sufficient authority to control the country’s political institutions. The occupation of Iran by British and Soviet forces further limited his independence and created opportunities for political groups, intellectuals, trade unions, and opposition movements to participate in public life.
Following Reza Shah’s abdication in 1941, several political parties emerged and became active in Iranian politics. These organizations represented different ideological orientations, including nationalism, socialism, communism, liberal constitutionalism, and royalism. Their emergence reflected the growing political awareness of Iranian society and the desire of different social groups to influence the country’s political direction.Among these organizations, the Tudeh Party of Iran became particularly influential.
